Middle School

Welcome to Pegasus Middle School. the middle school years are a time of tremendous academic, social, physical, and emotional growth. At pegasus, we build trusting student-teacher relationships, which create a space where students feel safe to take risks and to challenge themselves to grow.

The middle school experience is carefully designed to allow students to transition seamlessly from lower school and to have myriad opportunities to exercise leadership and practice compassion. Unique grade-level experiences allow students to build upon foundational skills through academic courses and explore individual interests through a wide range of electives and rotations.

We maintain a rigorous curriculum that promotes curiosity and empowers our students. As they shape their worldview within our diverse and supportive community, they develop confidence in their public speaking, writing, and problem solving. Pegasus students matriculate successfully to high schools locally and across the country and become leaders who use their voices to make a positive impact on society.

Middle School at a Glance

Grade 6

BUILDING FOUNDATIONS

As sixth graders transition from lower to middle school, they mature as learners and start to truly know themselves. Students become more proficient at organization, time management, study habits, active listening, collaborative work, and communication skills. Students are immersed in cross-curricular and collaborative activities including Cool Globes, the Cultural Research Project in Spanish class, the outdoor education trip to AstroCamp, the creation of C-Stunners in Art, as well as the building and programming of a robot in Computer Science. Sixth graders at Pegasus are introduced to complicated issues and tasks usually reserved for older students, but made manageable with extra hints, time and assistance. In this way, they are made ready for some of the greater challenges which await them in seventh grade and beyond. Becoming independent and active learners, students begin to advocate for themselves. They develop global and creative thinking, practice empathy, and leave more confident in their abilities as citizens.

Grade 7

BRIDGE TO SUCCESS

The seventh grade experience is a year of transition and transformation, as students cross the bridge from sixth to eighth grade. Seventh grade aims to equip students to overcome challenges by fostering growth, independence, self-awareness, organization, and time management. Seventh grade focuses on solidifying the academic foundations that students build throughout their Pegasus career by delivering rigorous academic experiences including preparing for and taking final exams for the first time. Our outdoor education trip to the Pali Institute, weekly advisory meetings, field trip to the Museum of Tolerance, and immersive experiences such as biological dissections, Greek Mythology Olympics, and Spanish Tertulia Café make the seventh grade experience unique and engaging. Seventh grade students end their year having built the wings they need to soar in eighth grade and beyond.

Grade 8

READY TO SOAR

During their last year at The Pegasus School, students engage in a challenging curriculum that continues to develop critical thinking, independence, and leadership. Preparing for the transition to high school, eighth graders participate in a variety of programs that enhance their work in the classroom as they consider the legacy they will leave as they graduate. Mock interviews, the buddy program, advisory, the outdoor education trip to Arizona, and a rigorous academic program work together to make the eighth-grade year a capstone of the Pegasus experience. Pegasus graduates enter high school prepared to tackle both academic and social challenges and to make a positive impact on the world.

Signature Programs

Advisory

Middle school years are a time of self discovery. Our mission is for students to develop strong relationships and connections within our community so that they can build confidence, take risks, and find their best selves in a safe and nurturing environment. Our advisory program revolves around the growth of the individual through the lens of our school’s social and emotional learning framework. Advisors help to guide student experiences and facilitate meaningful check-in meetings as students navigate the school year and learn more about who they are and where they stand.

ASB

ASB is designed for students to develop leadership skills and to build a positive culture at Pegasus. The students in ASB plan, organize, and participate in activities like spirit days, student announcements, dances, grade-level competitions, community service projects, and more. Projects allow students to have a voice in their activities and in the larger Pegasus community.

Community Service

At Pegasus, we integrate the ideals of community service into our programming. The Pegasus Community Service Program embodies experiential learning, community health, empowerment, and a shared responsibility to the greater community and the world around them.

In addition to our school wide service projects, Middle School students must complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service per year on their own.

Rotations

At Pegasus, we recognize that learning and discovery extend beyond the traditional academic classroom, especially regarding what makes us each a unique individual and our perceptions of the world around us. In Middle School, students are assigned a "rotation" of courses that will help them to develop a broad range of skills and interests beyond our core academic programming. Exposure to the arts, rhetoric, computer sciences, and other courses invigorate the mind, body, and heart, and we have our students engage in a number of capstone projects that facilitate their growth, an inner reflection, and a broader understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Electives

Tutorial

Every Monday through Thursday, tutorial time is intentionally provided at the end of the day for our Middle School students to get started on homework, work in small groups, receive extra help from their teachers or other resources, and make up tests/quizzes after being absent. All students are assigned a particular tutorial teacher, but they may visit any teachers/classrooms they choose.
