Pre-K through Grade 5

Welcome to the Pegasus Lower School. Our Lower School program is designed to provide the foundation of academic, social, and emotional success, whether your child joins our vibrant community on the first day of pre-Kindergarten or on the cusp of middle school as a fifth grader. Our teachers take great care in developing confidence, inspiring lifelong learning, and building intrinsic motivation in each child they are fortunate to teach. Strong student, teacher, and family relationships are important to us.

Lower school students are inquisitive learners, eager to apply their newfound reading and writing skills to explore their interests and the world around them. Our teachers provide an educational program that nurtures the development of each child’s talents and gifts in an environment where it is safe to take risks. The curriculum at each grade level is developmentally appropriate, but academically rigorous. Our interdisciplinary units of study in each grade level allow students to go deep in their exploration of the world, make connections between subjects, and build academic curiosity. Small teacher/student ratios enable teachers and students to build strong relationships that promote and encourage students to become innovative thinkers and confident learners.

Starting in pre-Kindergarten, our teachers foster a love for nature and the environment, strong and confident communication skills, and social-emotional learning skills that develop confidence and self-reliance. Teachers build on these strands throughout a child’s lower school experience as they add academic rigor. Pegasus students are bright, curious, confident thinkers who strive to shape their community and the world around them.

  • Early Childhood Program (Pre-K and K)

A strong emphasis on confidence and character development begins in our pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs. Responsible citizenship, teamwork, and the promotion of kindness is embedded in the curriculum and often happens through play. This starts in the early days in our indoor and outdoor classrooms. Our new Outdoor Classroom provides a space for children to develop problem-solving skills, creativity, and imagination. Our innovative space includes a music and movement area, a multi-sensory bike path and garden, a messy materials area, a climbing and crawling area, and space to roll down a hill. This area is always facilitated by teachers but is led by our Outdoor Classroom teachers. Classroom instruction focuses on academic skills, developmental needs, and the social-emotional well-being of each child.
  • The Elementary Years (Grades 1–5)

Academic rigor increases incrementally during the elementary years at Pegasus. Students are coached and encouraged to develop independence, confidence, and grit through independent and group projects with the guidance of highly skilled teachers. At Pegasus, we follow our students’ passions and interests as the curriculum unfolds each year. Our curriculum allows for students to learn concepts and explore their interests to extend their knowledge and creativity under the guidance of our faculty.
  • Specialty Classes and More

Our curriculum is enriched by specialty classes such as science, music, art, computer science, physical education, Spanish, library, and more. These classes begin in our early childhood program and increase throughout the elementary years. Specialists and homeroom teachers collaborate to demonstrate intersections and connections within academic subjects.
