Growing Up at the Right Place

As a lifelong educator, I’ve experienced schools from many perspectives: as a student, a teacher, and for the last twelve years as a head of school. I personally attended a K-8 school, and although I began my teaching career in a high school classroom, over time I have come to deeply appreciate the unmatched benefits of a PK-8 learning environment. These years are pivotal, and PK-8 schools offer the right balance of challenge, support, and opportunity to prepare students for high school and beyond.

For bright students like those at Pegasus, this balance is especially important. Their intellectual curiosity often outpaces their emotional development, and they need a learning environment that fuels their advanced thinking while nurturing their social growth. In my decades of leading schools for bright learners, I’ve seen how the PK-8 model allows bright students to be challenged academically while still having the time and space to grow into adolescence. Because our teachers collaborate across grade levels, we know each student’s individual needs as a learner, their passions, strengths, and areas for growth. Our program is intentional and benefits students as they don’t need to start over when they are just beginning to establish their identity. This continuity allows us to challenge students to meet their full potential, which sets them up for extraordinary success when they take their next step into high school. I am proud to say that almost 100% of our Pegasus students are admitted to the high school of their choice.

I often think back to my own middle school years. It was in seventh and eighth grade that I truly found my stride as a learner and as a person. I remember feeling deeply connected to my teachers and peers. I was comfortable taking risks, asking questions, and delving into subjects that fascinated me. I played basketball for my school team, built lasting friendships, and felt a strong sense of belonging within my school community. Many of my friends, however, left after sixth grade to attend junior high programs. Over the next few years, those friends ended up changing schools again in ninth grade, searching for the right fit. Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to stay in a consistent, supportive environment that allowed me to grow at the right pace. That continuity gave me confidence and stability during a time when so much was changing.

The continuity and connection that define Pegasus come into full focus in middle school. This is when students apply the skills, curiosity, and confidence they’ve built over the years in new, more complex ways, preparing them for the next stage of their academic and personal growth. These years are pivotal for developing identity, resilience, and confidence, as well as deepening critical thinking and problem-solving skills. At Pegasus, 8th graders are the oldest students on campus, giving them the opportunity to lead, mentor, and model for younger children. Whether organizing school events, leading service projects, or guiding younger students, they gain independence and confidence while being surrounded by a community that truly knows and supports them. This intentional structure allows them to fully embrace childhood while preparing for the exciting challenges of high school and beyond.

As I reflect on my own K-8 experience, I’m grateful for the way it shaped me as a learner and leader. It is my privilege to be the leader at a PK-8 school like Pegasus, inspiring bright minds to soar and helping our students become the confident, compassionate leaders the world needs.
