Unlocking Potential: What It Means to Be a Pegasus Graduate

By Dr. Regina McDuffie, Head of School

Our mission at The Pegasus School has always been: To inspire bright, curious minds to become confident, compassionate leaders. But what does that actually look like in practice? Our refined Portrait of a Pegasus Graduate is a roadmap; it answers the fundamental question we ask every day: How do we intentionally develop confidence and compassion in the amazing students we serve?

When we look at our eighth graders who will graduate in June, we see five key traits that define them as they move on to high school.

  • Self-Directed Learner and Scholar: Our graduates take ownership of their learning. They are curious, motivated, and understand how to set goals, seek feedback, and truly persist through complexity. This is how we help them to build confidence in their own ability to learn, grow and lead.
  • Critical Thinker and Effective Communicator:  Our graduates are taught to analyze, question, and evaluate ideas with discernment. They apply thoughtful judgment to real-world problems and communicate with clarity, and precision. They have the ability to listen actively and refine their thinking through dialogue with others. These skills empower our graduates to lead with both conviction and compassion.
  • Digitally Literate Human: Our graduates understand how to thoughtfully and ethically use digital tools and networks to advance their ideas for the good of their community.
  • Steward of the Environment: Our graduates develop a profound understanding of natural systems in our global world and in the universe. By acting with care and responsibility toward the environment, they foster compassion for the global and local communities they call home.
  • Collaborative Teammate: Our graduates contribute meaningfully to any community they join. They value diverse perspectives, share responsibility, and work toward collective goals. Leading with integrity and listening with intention, they use collaboration to achieve stronger outcomes for all.

Our Portrait of a Pegasus Graduate sits at the foundation of every learning experience we design. Since our founding in 1984, Dr. Laura Hathaway's vision for a school where bright minds could soar has guided us. Today, we continue that legacy, ensuring every Pegasus student is equipped with the skills, habits, and mindsets they need to become the confident, compassionate leaders of tomorrow.

As we look ahead to June, we are thrilled to send our graduates off to a number of different high schools. They have certainly left their mark on Pegasus and will now carry that spirit to a remarkably diverse range of secondary schools across the country. Regardless of which high school they will attend, we know that our graduates are prepared to be the confident, compassionate leaders we have nurtured. They are ready to soar!
