Reflecting on Fall Sports

By Dr. Regina McDuffie

As the fall sports season wraps up, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable ways our student-athletes embodied the Habits of Mind on the volleyball court and the football field. These habits—essential for success both in sports and in life—were evident not only in their gameplay but also in the stories shared by our coaches during the end-of-season sports banquet.

One of the most inspiring habits I observed was persisting. Our athletes demonstrated an incredible ability to remain focused and not give up. Whether it was fighting back after a tough set in volleyball or pushing through a challenging play in flag football, they used self-talk to stay motivated and keep going. This resilience was contagious, lifting up their teammates and setting a tone of determination for the entire team.

Another standout habit was thinking interdependently. More than just teamwork, this habit involves learning from others and contributing to a collective effort. On the field and court, our students showed that collaboration isn’t about losing individual identity but enhancing it through shared experiences and insights. They leaned on each other’s strengths, communicated effectively, and supported one another in moments of challenge and triumph.

Hearing the coaches reflect on specific players who consistently displayed these habits was a powerful reminder of the growth our students experience through sports. It’s not just about scoring points or winning games; it’s about building character, developing leadership, and learning life lessons that will serve them well beyond the season.

As we look ahead to the next season, I am excited to see how our student-athletes continue to cultivate these habits, growing both as individuals and as members of a team.
