Mr. Devin Seifer Honored at Founder's Day

Pegasus celebrated its ninth annual Founder's Day in memory of Dr. Laura Hathaway, Founder and Visionary. Mr. Devin Seifer, Middle School Algebra Teacher, was recognized as the 2019-20 honoree during the September Founder's Day Community Gathering.
Individuals selected each year are teachers and/or staff who have contributed to the School and dedicated noteworthy service to students and the Pegasus Community. Mr. Seifer has devoted 20 year to The Pegasus School and has instilled the love of math and learning in many of his students.

Mrs. Nancy Wilder, Middle School English Teacher, delivered a heartwarming speech about Mr. Seifer during the Community Gathering. Below is an excerpt from that speech:

"Dr. Hathaway dreamed of a school where young scholars could build wings so they could soar, and she hired teachers with the fortitude and creativity to carry out her vision. Mr. Seifer does so with steadfast determination. To build confidence, independence, and critical thinking skills, he purposefully does not answer questions. Instead, he challenges his students to find the answers by using the available resources, including their brains. With his instinctive talent and hunger for innovation, Mr. Seifer cares for his students by allowing them to struggle. His high expectations and lively competitions lead to struggle. And that struggle is a gift that continues to serve students long after they leave Pegasus...Because of Mr. Seifer’s dedication to his craft, which is part art and part science, there are thousands of smarter, more confident, more resilient people in the world. Whether he can see the results of his genius right away or even at all, rest assured that his students develop tenacity and creativity under his careful watch. Many students have discovered their love of math in his classroom."

In honor of Mr. Seifer, a copy of the book, Flowers for Algernon, is now available in the Pegasus Library. The novel is an all-time favorite of Mr. Seifer's  and "will serve as a reminder that we all need to ask the difficult questions and to embrace the struggle necessary to find some acceptable answers," according to Mrs. Wilder.

“I don’t ever want to be on the same page as anyone else. Ever. There are plenty of pages for everyone.”
